My News Channel for Teens (PPE Exam Topic)

Name: itsNews!

This logo will be in bubble writing, it is also quite quirky which would solve the issue of news being too serious for teenagers. 

Stories:
I thought that I could make my news channel unique by including different news for different areas that my audience is watching, therefore if I was watching itsNews! in West London then local news to me would be shown and young adults would deliver the news in a scripted conversation to make my news interesting and apply to the audience wherever they are.

Ideas: 
Young people that may enjoy watching itsNews! are able to apply to appear on the show to join the live conversation between the teenagers and every news show could include 4 fixed, young presenters and one teenager that has applied to join the show online and every show will feature someone new meaning there is always different opinions on the show that teenagers could join in with.

Social Link:
Teenagers could post their opinions on issues shown on the programme by including a hashtag such as #itsNews! on Twitter meaning these teenagers opinion can be read out by the presenters making our young audience feel their opinions are being heard.

I have chosen a wide range of topics that I would like to feature in my news programme that teenagers will be interested in such as:

Choice of Topics: News
One issue about news now is that most news show teenagers in bad light therefore the news that we can show on itsNews! can feature teenagers that have done something impressive and can be on the show, this could also be good for teenagers in the UK as they would try harder to achieve something special to be able to appear on the show.

What my presenters will wear:
Another issue that I have identified about news stations on TV is that everyone shown is dressed extremely formally which can appear boring and intimidating meaning they would not enjoy or be interested in it. This means that my presenters must dress casually and stylishly to make them seem relatable to our audience.

Timing:
The timing of my TV News should be at a time in which teenagers are likely to already be watching TV, this would tackle the issue of them preferring to go online as it means that they can watch the news after watching their favourite shows such as The Simpsons or Citizen Khan. The timing for my programme will between the times of 5-7:30pm.

Film Trailer and Poster Analysis

Key Conventions of this Film Poster

- The central image of Leonardo diCaprio in an expensive looking suit would appeal to the target audience of 65%  men and 35% woman between the ages of 20-35 who aspire to be rich and probably like this popular Hollywood actor.

- The title is in black and yellow which is in synergy with the fact that this film is based in Wall Street which is in New York, an American state popular for its black and yellow cabs.This would definitely appeal to the target audience who want to see stylish men in New York partying as part of a comedy film all about money and lavish lifestyles.

- The secondary image is of an office full of semi-naked women and money seemingly falling from the ceiling in a film based around the concept of a man getting rich in Wolf Street. This would be pleasing for the target audience who want to see partying, hot woman, money and criminals as this is a comedy, action movie involving lots of money and costly lifestyles.

- Leonardo diCaprio is smiling whilst directly looking at the camera and almost smirking at us and challenging the person looking at the film poster, this is linked with the character he plays in the film which is a defiant, risk-taking man who makes a lot of money from a life of crime in the film. This would appeal the target audience because he directly addresses the reader which makes it seem as if they have a personal relationship with Leonardo diCaprio and is in his character of a rich criminal.

- The name of the popular director, Martin Scorsese and famous actor Leonardo diCaprio are central in this film poster and are used to advertise the film because it features two admired people in the cinema world. This appeals to the target audience because they obviously know who these two people are as 'movie-watchers' and this would attract them to buy a ticket to watch this film.


Key Conventions of this Film Trailer


- The institutional details of the film are shown around the middle of the trailer in which Leonardo diCaprio and Jonah Hill are all mentioned with 'Academy Award Nominee' above their name instantly telling the audience that a lot of money was spent on this film. This would appeal to the target audience because both these actors specialise in action, comedy films such as 21 Jump Street and Inception.

- Many jumpcuts are used throughout the trailer to show the key and the best moments within the film such as scenes of Leonardo diCaprio on a lavish boat, having a party in his office and in what looks to be a meeting.This is effective because it shows a couple of sides to this film, making money at Wall Street and then spending the millions he makes on hot women, Italian sport cars and many many parties. This would appeal to the male side of the target audience because in an action, comedy film they want to see fast cars, hot women and famous actors making money illegally which is all shown within the trailer, this tells the audience that the film contains the classic action, comedy content that they are interested in.

- There are many fast shots shown in this film trailer showing fast cars and hot women, this could suggest to the audience that the film is fast-paced and full of tension and excitement which is the exact message that this specific genre of films would want to send in its trailers.

- The title and release date are shown at the end of the film trailer, this is good because it should be the last thing the audience sees so it stick in their mind which is crucial to ALL films as they must be an amazing hit in the opening weekend otherwise not enough profit will be made.

- The non-diegetic music used in this film trailer is extremely fast and is like a classic hip-hop song (which are usually linked to crime, similarly to this film). The music could say something about the film to the audience, maybe suggesting how fast-paced and full of excitement the movie is.

- Many non-diegetic sounds are used in this trailer, one of which is the author of the book version of this film (Jordan Belfort) talking about how much money he made in the previous year (49 million) and he cockily expresses his anger that he did not make 52 million to make it 1 million per week. This seems extremely arrogant and humorous to the audience which would also attract them to watch this film. A short part of the trailer is of Leonardo diCaprio directly speaking to the audience about making money which also shows how significant money is in this film, which would appeal to the target audience who like to see unethically made money in an action, comedy film.

- The diegetic sound used in this trailer are mainly the sound of characters making arrogant remarks and of people partying and unnecessarily making loud noises, this also portrays a successful image to the audience about the film which shows the film is all about money, crime, hot women and fast cars which is exactly what the target audience want to see.

1) What film have you chosen?

I have chosen The Wolf of Wall Street which features Leonardo diCaprio and popular film director Martin Scorsese.

2) Why did you choose this film in particular?

I chose The Wolf of Wall Street because there are many things to analyse within the film poster and trailer such as the iconography of gold watches and semi-naked woman in the background. It is also an interesting film because of its content about a poor man who gets lucky with a new job and makes million of dollars and starts hosting parties and getting drunk. This movie is based on a novel written by Jordan Belfort.

The production company behind The Wolf of Wall Street was Red Granite Pictures and Paramount Pictures.

The genre of The Wolf of Wall Street is a Comedy film.

I can tell that The Wolf of Wall Street is a comedy film because of the funny actions and remarks the main character (Leonardo diCaprio) does or says such as throwing a glass of alcohol into a garden and walking into an office full of semi-naked woman and a monkey which would be considered quite humorous and random.

No, my chosen movie is not a sequel and does not have any sequels as yet.

No previous films by the director or actor are mentioned, however it is stated that the movie is based on a book written by Jordan Belfort.

The first Wolf of Wall Street trailer appeared on YouTube on the 16th June 2013 (5 months prior to release) by Paramount Pictures.

No teaser trailer, newspaper article or TV interview was found however the main trailer was released 5 months prior to release which is mentioned above.

It’s a social thing

1) What was the word-of-mouth like for your chosen film? 

The average rating for The Wolf of Wall Street was 8.3, which is quite a high rating. Some people thought that the movie was hilarious and had a great plot while others stated that the film is way too long and the plot was all about drinking, sex and the use of drugs which people found boring and one person even said that he had slept through some of it.

The main star of the film was Leonardo diCaprio.

Leonardo diCaprio has previously acted in many films including the Box Office hit Titanic (Romance), Inception (Sci-Fi Thriller) and Django Unchained (Western Action). These films suggest that he has also acted in a wide range of genre of films, similarly to Martin Scorsese.

Genre and NCIS

Film Trailer: Ted
Genre: Comedy (2013)
Evidence (NCIS): This film is a comedy film with a little bit of romance, the usual iconography I would expect is hot women, sex scenes, funny and unrealistic situations that make the movie funny. There is also one dramatic breakthrough in the middle of the film which is resolved at the end which is also something I would expect. The setting is in America, in a casual area. There is a goofy and unrealistic character involved which is the teddy bear who makes lot of references to sex, nudity and drugs which makes the film a comedy since it a teddy bear
Film Trailer: The Conjuring
Genre: Horror (2013)
Evidence (NCIS): This film is a horror film that involves a dead witch, this is quite expected iconography as witches aren't real and because it is a classic scary character. The setting I would expect and is shown in this film is a new house that it found to be haunted early in the film. The conjuring could be described as a mockumentary as is it meant to be a documentary about a haunted house but is not a real story. This is made obvious with the 'fake' use of handheld cameras. There is a hot woman that dies and a frightening character that is not revealed but only in glimpses making the film a horror story.

Evidence (NCIS): This film is a classic action film that involves fast cars, drug references, hot women and a villain that obviously gets killed at the end of the film. The hero of the film is victorious in the end and he drives, fast cars whilst doing what looks to be impossible which makes this film an action film. Lots of hot woman are involved in this film and classically the hero and the hot women get married at the end of the film

Time Magazine Analysis

-Steve Jobs is staring directly at the reader, confronting the reader and smiling tempting the reader to purchase the magazine. Jobs looking and smiling at the reader makes it seem the reader knows him which is good because he is a successful and famous person.  Therefore, this makes the reader feel elegant because it seems as he knows Steve Jobs, where in reality he doesn't but still makes the reader feel privileged as they know someone popular and revolutionary. 

-The colour scheme used on this magazine front cover is red, white and black, which are usually considered quite sophisticated colours which the target readers would like. I think the target readers are between the ages 30-50 and would be 60% men and 40% women. They would be A and B class. I think they would most likely have a degree in University in Law, Medicine or Engineering as these are the higher class jobs, that would mean the reader has enough income to spend on this magazine. I think mostly white people would read this magazine however many black people would also read this with the ratio being 55% white and 45% black. They would also live in the city because that is where they would have heard about Steve Jobs and his Apple products. 

-Using Steve Jobs at the front cover of the magazine makes the reader feel knowledgeable and higher class by reading this magazine. He is a successful and important figure which would also make this magazine stand out on a shelf. This is because he is staring directly at the reader and it seems he is addressing you specifically, also making you want to buy the magazine. 

-The sell line ‘Inside Steve’s Pad’ is very informal and makes it seem that the reader knows Steve Jobs. This makes the reader feel sophisticated and therefore want to purchase the magazine. This cover line also makes the reader want to buy the magazine because it seems like private information that only the reader will know about. This also makes the reader feel   and gives the impression that they have a personal friendship with him.  The font used is also San Serif which also makes it seem informal. This makes the reader feel privileged and in an advantage to everyone else because they know personal information about 'Steve'. 

- The Time magazine logo is written in a Serif font, this also makes the magazine seem classy and therefore makes the reader feel classy. This is because Serif font is quite a stylish font that makes the reader feel presidential as by the time he has read this magazine, he would have had a personal friendship with Steve Jobs.

From the running order of BBC News at 6pm and 10pm, I have noticed that political issues are usually talked about for a large amount of time in the beginning of the show then less serious news it presented at the end like sports new and business news. This tell me that the quite boring, more serious news is presented at the beginning whereas the end of the show is more interesting. 





Minority Report: Shot by Shot Analysis

Shot 1:Medium close up (MCU)

This medium close up shot is of the flying cops, this shot emphasises how many cops there are going after Tom Cruise. Not much of the background is shown, however it seems to be a train station, because there is an escalator in the back and that is where Tom Cruise gets off his train and spots the flying cops. The medium shot allows enough background to show the large number of cops. All the cops are looking at the same thing, suggesting something suprising or significant is happening.


Shot 2: Wide shot / establishing shot (WS/ES)

This is an establishing shot because it is setting the scene, which is a classic fight venue in Hollywood. It is a dark alley, with a rusty car parked carelessly to show someone's hurry to get away. Therefore it is easy for the audience to interpret that a fight or a confrontation is about to occur. The shot also allows an appropriate amount of background to show the flying cops running into the alleyway and possibly confronting Tom Cruise.

Shot 3: Over-the-shoulder shot (OTS)

This is an over the shoulder shot however it can also be interpreted as a close up shot as not much of the flying cops shoulder is shown. Not much of the background is shown, but we have already established this scene is set in a dark alleyway. We can tell from Tom Cruise's facial expression that he has been caught and is hopeless.

Advert Analysis


Language:

The first key convention that tell people this is an advert are the 3 Lynx products in the middle of the ad. A seductive, woman has been used in this advert, which brings attention to the advert. A funny sexual remark has been used which says “Clean your balls, because no-one likes dirty balls”-this is in context with the advert because shampoo is being advertised. Two sport balls are in the background, which is supposed to be a synergy of the funny remark. Men wanting to attract woman like the one used in the advert, having blonde hair, blue eyes and is white can be a stereotype of the typical attractive woman.

Institution

The institution behind Lynx is Unilever. Unilever is a Dutch multinational consumer good company. The company does not have many different rival companies because they own all other businesses that could potentially be their rivals.


Audience:


I think the target audience for this product are teenagers and young adults between the age of 15-25, because older men would not find this very funny. Teenagers and young adults would like this because of the attractive woman used in the advert and also because of the funny sexual remark. I think the ratio of men to women would be 100% men, because it is a men's deodorant.

Representation:

The representation in this advert is clearly for male's because of the seductive woman used in the advert and because the products is aimed at men which makes it very obvious who the product is aimed at. This woman is made to look very seductive, and would therefore give their audience the idea that if you use this product you will attract women like this.

BBC News is broadcasted everyday at 6am,1pm,6pm and 10pm. Each broadcast lasts for 30 minutes except for the show at 6am which last for 3 hours and 15 minutes and is called BBC Breakfast. Sophie Raworth present BBC News at One and at Six for Monday to Thursday. Huw Edward presents BBC News at Ten from Monday to Thursday every week. Fiona Bruce presents BBC News at Six and at Ten on Fridays. BBC News won the International Emmy for News in 2002 and 2007. BBC News at One averages around 4.6m viewers, whereas BBC News at Six has around 4m viewers per show. BBC News at Ten is the most viewed News show in the UK with an average of 4.9m views every show. The video clip below shows the breaking news of Lady Diana's car crash in 1997 on BBC News.

I think the target audience for this News channel are people between the ages of 15-45. I think middle class people would watch this and the ratio between men and woman would be 60% men and 40% woman.

Match of The Day Research Project



Programme: BBC Match of the Day


 1) The key information about the       programme: 

BBC  Match  of  the Day is broadcasted every  Saturday at 10:30pm. The main presenter is Gary Lineker, and the co-presenter is Alan Hansen. Lineker is usually joined by two   pundits that analyse the Premier League football matches throughout the week. The pundits include Robbie Savage, Mark Lawrenson and Danny Murphy. All pundits are retired footballers. The average viewing figures are between 3.3m and 3.7m every show. BBC Match of the Day won the British Academy Television Craft Award in 2007.  The video clip below  shows the analysis of the Spain versus Holland match during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

 I think the target the target  audience for this TV programme are football fans between the age of 10-30, I think the ratio between men and  women would  be 80% men and 20% women. I  think middle class people would watch this show and people with  quite a basic salary.

4) The running order for three separate editions of the programme:

The underlined team are the top Premier League teams, and this has helped me identify the fact that Match of the Day presents the best matches earlier on the the show, and leaves the less interesting matches.However  Manchester United are left until the 6th match, this could have been because the match was quite dull and ended 0-0 or because they should not even be considered a good Premier League club anymore.
