Wolf of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall Street

How are American business men represented? Why?

American businessmen are represented as arrogant men that have so much money that its worth has been forgotten, this is shown in the scene where the main character is throwing $100 bills into the bin. The fact that this movie is called 'The Wolf of Wall Street' shows that he is predatory in his actions with money and his work. Men are also shown using scarcely dressed women, driving fast cars and wasting money, showing us that he is very selfish and self-centred. He shows this as hosting outrageous, lavish parties and using women as objects throughout the trailer.

How is the idea of the American Dream represented? Why?

The idea of the  American Dream is presented as being extremely wealthy, driving fast cars and exploiting women. This makes these things seem like the perfect life within the character in the film, some of the scenes shown such as Leonardo DiCaprio on a yacht or him driving a sports car are two examples of what may be considered 'The American Dream' to the target and real audience of this film.

How are the 1980s represented? Is the film critical of a certain mentality or way of life? Why?

Black people are shown to be poor or low class as none are represented in Wall Street (an road home to the New York Stock Exchange in an expensive part of New York)  or the whole trailer except for one black person who is shown as waitor which may stereotypically suggest that black people are serving the rich, white people. This may suggest that people may have had stereotypical mindsets or mentality's  in the 1980s. I think the director added this to make a comment about American society. The film is is critical of poor people and low standard's of living

How is the dwarf represented (person with a disability)? Why?

The dwarf is used to play with and just highlights the white, rich people's arrogance and exploitation of vulnerable people. They are used to play with and to throw around, this shows their value for other people and outlines their arrogance.

How are women represented? Is the film sexist? Why?

Women in this trailer are represented as sex objects, the main character is seen with numerous women throughout the trailer. The women are all represented to be with the men for their wealth, which also presents the women in bad light.
